The Amish

A couple nights ago I watched a fascinating PBS documentary on the Amish in America. While the filmmakers present a secular angle, the film gives insights into the Amish movement, raising issues with parallels in evangelical and Reformed circles: the crippling, distorting effects of legalism, what it means to be “in the world but not of it”, issues of parenting, engagement with media technology, church discipline, monastic tendencies, forgiveness, and more.

Sadly those filmed by the filmmakers miss the gospel, leaving a sober question as to whether the Amish community only has a form of godliness, but one which lacks or proclaims “another gospel”, denying the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. (Galatians 1:6-9) Watch it, learn, and if in God’s providence you have Amish neighbors, get to know them better, and love them with the riches of God’s grace in Christ.
